It is the foremost tourist destination in the province of Pangasinan in northern Philippines. It is a five-hour drive north of Manila passing through Pampanga, Tarlac, and finally to Alaminos. The jump-off point is the town of Lucap. Three of the most popular islands are the Quezon Island, Governor's Island and the Children's Island. Aside from the islands themselves, caves abound at the Hundred Islands. Today, up to ten caves have been identified and some were named based on some myths, legends and the stone formation. One would be enthralled at the giant clams locally called "taklobo" which is being considered to be the biggest bivalve mollusks in the world. The waters of the Hundred Islands is home to coral reefs which shelter, feed and protect sea creatures in the park. They also aid the islets in protecting the city's coast from the impact of waves.

Yap: Government to start irrigation component of San Roque dam

Yap: Government to start irrigation component of San Roque dam
by Evelyn @ 11:07 am. Filed under News

MANAOAG, PANGASINAN — After a five-year delay, the government will finally be able to begin the construction of the irrigation component of the San Roque multipurpose dam in San Manuel town.

During a visit here on Friday, Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap told farmers’ groups that about P215 million has been included in the agriculture budget next year for the project.

“Will it be finished? I don’t know. Gusto ko pong maging tapat sa inyo (I just want to tell you the truth),” Yap said.

He said his objective now was to have the irrigation project funded even if it meant irrigating only about 7,000 hectares of rice field in Pangasinan province, which, he noted, will already be a big help to farmers.

During its construction stage in the mid-1990s, the $1.2-billion San Roque Multipurpose Dam Project boasted of an irrigation component that could provide water to about 87,000 ha of rice fields in Pangasinan and Tarlac.

The dam was completed in 2002, but minus its irrigation component. Yap said the irrigation project has been approved by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) and the Japanese government, which will release the fund through the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC).

Our Lady of Manaoag

Our Lady of Manaoag Church outside and inside picture

The Spanish Dominicans worked for the catholic Church in Manaoag from 1610 to 1971 less 10 years ( out-break of the Revolution against Spain to 1908 when the American soldiers left Manaoag) or a total of 351 years. Most famous of the Spanish Missionaries of Manaoag are Fathers: Tomas Gutierrez, Juan De San Jacinto, Jose Solis, Fernando Sta. Maria, Hilario del Campo, Andres Duque, Domingo Andres, Mariano Rodriguez, Basilio Martin, Teodulo Cajigal, Evaristo Rojo, Gerardo Manzanedo, and Patricio Rodgrigo.

Fr. Juan De San Jacinto was the one who transfered the Church and town to its present site, and placed it under the patronage of Our Lady of the Rosary. The first churches were of modest size and materials. It was only in 1701 when the first church of bricks was put up by Don Gaspar Gamboa and his wife Dona Agata Yangta, Spaniards and members of the Dominican Third Order. They eventually donated the church to the Dominican Fathers. various improvements were made on this church until it was destroyed by the earthquake of 1832. efforts were made to build new churches but they were destroyed by the earthquakes of 1880, and 1893. Fr. Hilario Del Campo made plans for a new, big church, but was not finished because of the Revolution of 1898 which occasioned by departure of the Spanish Dominicans from Pangasinan.

From 1898 to 1908 the spiritual care of Manaoag was under a Filipino secular priest named Fr. Mariano Pacis. When peace returned to the Philippines under the American occupation, the Spanish Dominicans returned. They were offered San Carlos or Manaoag to keep as souvenir of their apostolic work in this Region. They chose Manaoag because of the donation made by Don Gaspar Gamboa and because it has the Shrine of the Blessed Virgin.
